We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pope Francis, who fearlessly called for the repair of the historical wrongdoings within the climate crisis. In response to his call and guidance, we gathered in Rome this past March for the Frontline People’s Jubilee Convening on Global Climate Reparations, bringing together frontline leaders, Catholic Church leaders, and laypeople to take steps to heal and repair our broken relationship with each other and the earth. It was a gathering rooted in hope, joy, and light at a time of deep darkness. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to convene together under the papacy and leadership of Pope Francis.
“At a time when our climate crisis is worsening and society faces ongoing disasters, Pope Francis has been a moral voice for climate justice, human dignity, and the common good. His teachings in Ladauto Si, Ladauto Deum, and Fratteli Tutti – as well as his continued calls for peace, the abolition of debt, the rights of migrants, and the end of extractivism– have been aligned with the frontline call for Global Climate Reparations.
While Pope Francis returns home, his legacy and vision continue in the work of the people. We know that change takes a village and when two or three are gathered, the Spirit is present. We are committed to advancing Global Climate Reparations and the role that the Church plays to repair and advance solutions rooted in Black Liberation and Indigenous sovereignty. The Global Climate Reparations vision calls for the creation of accountable institutions and systems, and we hope that the new leadership of the Church will listen to the spirit and uphold Pope Francis’ legacy and guidance.”

The faithful have gathered. The call has been made. And in his memory, we will carry it forward.
